Every Second Friday

When I was four, my parents separated. I lived most of the time with my mum but spent many weekends with my dad. He loves collecting treasures from op shops and garage sales. We would listen to music on his record player, dress up, and read lots of books together.

One weekend, when I was a teenager, I discovered a box of keepsakes he had saved from my childhood—photos, artwork, and little mementos. Those memories all found their way into this book about coming to terms with having two homes. As a child, I didn’t see many picture books that represented families like mine, and I believe it’s important for young readers to see characters they can identify with.

It was wonderful working with Ben Galbraith on this picture book. He brought the story to life and added so many beautiful details to the illustrations. Somehow he just knew some of the things my father collected and put them in the book.
